Michael Jones

Michael Jones is an accomplished pianist/composer, an evocative writer and storyteller, and a deep and thoughtful speaker who offers a uniquely creative, memorable and inspired experience. Author of Artful Leadership: Awakening the Commons of the Imagination, Michael has been engaged for over thirty years in transforming leadership through awakening the life of the imagination. In times of complexity and sudden change, he believes we need to build bridges across different disciplines in order to see our familiar landscapes with new and fresh eyes.

Sherri Torjman is the Vice President of the Caledon Institute of Social Policy and the author of the highly acclaimed book Shared Space: The Communities Agenda. Co-founder of Vibrant Communities, Sherri is one of Canada’s leading commentators on social policy for communities.

Brenda Zimmerman is co-author of the book Getting to Maybe: How the World is Changed. She teaches at the Schulich School of Business and is the founding Director of York’s Health Industry Management Program. Brenda’s gifts for speaking, scholarship, teaching and writing have brought many advancements to management and complexity thinking.

Paul Born is the Co-founder and President of Tamarack – An Institute for Community Engagement. He has extensive experience in helping organizations and communities to develop new and sustainable ideas that motivate people to collaborative action.

Paul was the Executive Director and Founder of the Community Opportunities Development Association (CODA) for 12 years (now Lutherwood), one of Canada’s most successful community economic development organizations, and Opportunities 2000, a millennium campaign to reduce poverty in Waterloo Region to the lowest in Canada, which was recognized as one of the United Nations’ "Top 40 Projects Worldwide" in 1998.

He holds a Master’s degree in Leadership, is a Mennonite inspired by Yoga and Buddhism, and is a dad that loves to cook.

Mark Cabaj is the Lead Coach and Interim Director for Vibrant Communities. He is well-versed in the art of convening and supporting a national collaborative for change, working with foundations, all levels of government, local and national voluntary organizations and, on occasion, businesses to assist them with their specific community engagement efforts. He also provides tailored speaking, training, coaching and strategic consulting to meet the particular needs of the requesting groups.

Mark began his community building work with Human Resources Development Canada and aboriginal groups in rural Alberta. In the early 1990s, he lived in Poland where he worked with the Polish government on regional economic development. For four years, Mark was a principal of Waterloo Region's Opportunities 2000 project. Mark briefly served as the Executive Director of the Canadian CED Network and did graduate work in urban and regional planning at the University of Waterloo.

Louise Kearney leads Tamarack's award-winning Learning Centre, working with an incredible team to capture, animate and share ideas that work. The Learning Centre produces engaging learning events, provides dynamic online learning and publishes Tamarack's best thinking.

Louise found a home in community-based work at Opportunities 2000 and joined Tamarack upon its inception in 2001. She holds a Master's degree in History and recently completed the Executive Program for Non-profit Leaders at Stanford University.

Garry Loewen is an independent consultant and most recently served as the executive director of Winnipeg’s North End Community Renewal Corporation. Garry has worked as a businessperson, a parish minister, an economic development director and a community activist.

Prior to directing the North End Community Renewal Corp., Garry served as the executive director of the Canadian CED Network, and as the community economic development director for Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba. In that capacity, he became the founding executive director of SEED Winnipeg, a micro-enterprise development organization. He was also the founder and president of Opportunities for Employment, an organization that assists welfare recipients to make the transition from welfare to work.
