Vibrant Communities Canada Tamarack Board of Directors
 
The Board provides governance for the work of Tamarack and counsel toward its strategic focus and direction.

Board members are:

Chairman: Alan Broadbent

Alan Broadbent is Chairman of Maytree, the Tamarack Institute and the Caledon Institute of Social Policy. He is also Chairman and CEO of Avana Capital Corporation. Alan is the author of Urban Nation: Why we Need to Give Power Back to the Cities to Make Canada Strong. In addition, Alan is Chairman and CEO of Jamscor Inc.; Chairman of the Tides Canada Foundation; Chairman of Diaspora Dialogues; advisor to the Literary Review of Canada; Co-chair of Happy Planet Foods; member of the Governors’ Council of the Toronto Public Library Foundation; Senior Fellow of Massey College and Member of the Order of Canada.

Vice Chair: Nathan Gilbert

Nathan Gilbert is the Executive Director of the Laidlaw Foundation. During his tenure, he has helped to transform Laidlaw from a private family foundation into a public interest foundation that focuses its resources on innovation in the fields of improving life chances for children and youth, performing arts, ecosystem sustainability, and socially responsible investment research. Nathan serves or has served as a Director of Inter Pares, Theatre Direct Canada, Private Foundations Canada, Grantmakers for Children, Youth and Families (U.S.), and the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts. Prior to his appointment at the Laidlaw Foundation, Nathan was the Executive Director of the Ontario Municipal Social Services Association.

Treasurer: Colin Robertson

Colin Robertson is the Chief Financial Officer of Avana Capital Corporation and Treasurer of Maytree. He is also the Treasurer and a Director of both Tamarack and Diaspora Dialogues Charitable Society. Previously, Colin held senior financial positions in both the high-tech and financial services sectors. After obtaining his Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Toronto, Colin trained with Coopers & Lybrand, qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1983.

Corporate Secretary: Vali Bennett

Vali Bennett is the Director of Administration of the Avana Capital Corporation. Vali holds an Honours B.A. in English and literary studies from the University of Toronto, and is the Corporate Secretary for a number of other organizations, including Diaspora Dialogues, The Literary Review of Canada, the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation, and the Tamarack Institute.

Ratna Omidvar

Ratna Omidvar is President of Maytree, a private foundation dedicated to accelerating the settlement of immigrants and refugees. Under Ratna’s leadership, Maytree has gained international recognition for its expertise in developing, testing, and implementing programs and policy solutions related to immigration, integration and diversity. Ratna also serves as a director of the Toronto City Summit Alliance, and is a member of the board of the Tamarack Institute. She was the first executive director of the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council and is currently the chair of its Board of Directors.

Ratna is a Fellow of Centennial College, and received an honorary diploma from George Brown College. In 2006, Ratna was appointed to the Order of Ontario.

President: Paul Born

Paul Born directs Tamarack – An Institute for Community Engagement, a ten year journey and partnership with Alan Broadbent of the Avana Capital Corporation and Maytree to advance place based solutions to entrenched problems like poverty. Prior to founding Tamarack Paul  was the Executive Director and founder of The Community Opportunities Development Association (CODA), one of Canada’s most successful community economic development organizations where he also founded Opportunities 2000, a millennium campaign to reduce poverty in Waterloo Region to the lowest in Canada. His work has been recognized nationally and internationally with awards from the United Nations, Conference Board of Canada, Imagine Canada and the Governor General of Canada. 

Paul holds a Masters degree in Leadership and is an Author of three books, including Community Conversations, Creating Vibrant Communities and Leaderful Communities. Paul is a motivational, inspiring, speaker who loves the power of stories. Learn more about Paul at www.paulborn.ca.
