Victoria's Approach

Imagine…a vibrant and sustainable region, where everyone lives in a safe and decent home and is able to care for themselves, their families and their community. The Quality of Life CHALLENGE is diverse community partners working together to generate long-lasting solutions that prevent and reduce poverty in BC’s Capital Region.

The Quality of Life CHALLENGE:

  • works collaboratively and strategically towards shared goals
  • includes people living on low income
  • fosters corporate and personal leadership and responsibility
  • recognizes, links and builds on all efforts

The three priorities include increasing sustainable incomes, reducing costs of living, and creating learning opportunities.

Building Essential Skills

Employers in Greater Victoria can address the need to engage and retain employees by participating in a project designed to improve Essential Skills in the workplace. The SkillsPlus project, a partnership between the Quality of Life CHALLENGE and Victoria READ, helps small businesses in the retail, wholesale, grocery and tourism and hospitality sectors by providing training in skills such as computer use, reading and numeracy, built into work-based training.

Employers who have invested in Essential Skills training have seen accuracy, productivity, and safety improve as employees’ self-confidence, loyalty and flexibility increase. The project also gives up to 40 eligible employees the opportunity to boost their skills.
