Winnipeg's Approach

The Winnipeg Poverty Reduction Council is based on the understanding that no single group or organization can successfully address poverty on its own. Through a collaborative, community-wide, integrated, and cross-sectoral approach, the WPRC aims to support and enhance current initiatives to create “A City Where Everyone Belongs.”

WPRC focuses on eight areas:

  • early childhood development
  • early education
  • post-secondary education
  • social infrastructure
  • asset building and wealth creation
  • affordable housing
  • disability income and quality of life benefits
  • public education and engagement

Community Indicators for Winnipeg

The International Institute for Sustainable Development and United Way of Winnipeg are partnering to develop a community indicators system for the city of Winnipeg. Community indicators systems identify and track over time indicators that relate to economic, environmental, cultural, social, and other priorities and issues that matter most to members of a community. Staff of the Winnipeg Poverty Reduction Council are involved as members of both the Steering Committee and the Technical Committee. This project will help link the work of the council with other poverty reduction strategies as well as provide a venue to report progress to the broader public.
