Resources for Funders

Philanthropy Explosion: It's not just for the wealthy anymore - Giving is giving is giving. Yet, traditionally the term 'philanthropy' has been the domain of the wealthy. It doesn't have to be that way, though. You no longer need to be wealthy and prominent like the Bill Gates' of the world to set up foundations or make strategic decisions about granting funds. Social Justice Grantmaking - The first study of foundation support for social justice grantmaking found that at the largest foundations in the United States, 11 percent of grant dollars support structural changes aiding those who are least well-off economically, socially and politically. According to Social Justice Grantmaking: A Report on Foundation Trends, released by Independent Sector and the Foundation Center, support spans all areas of foundation activity, from promoting economic development in distressed areas to ensuring access to healthcare for disadvantaged populations to encouraging diversity in education. View highlights of the report here. [Source: FNCNOW Digest]

Innovative Philanthropic Leadership - This speech by Alan Broadbent was delivered at the Association of Fundraising Professionals meeting in Toronto, on March 24, 2003. Available online at: http://www.tidescanada.org/files/pdf/alan_broadbent_speech.pdf.

The Due Diligence Tool: For Use in Pre-Grant Assessment - Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO) recently released this tool to provide program officers with a research-based methodology for conducting due diligence. "Worksheets, checklists and interview questions included in the tool can guide grantmakers in reviewing the most telling documents, asking the most salient questions and gaining a better understanding of what to look for." Leveraging What You Know: Knowledge Management Strategies for Funders - Also from GEO, this resource synthesizes the latest trends in knowledge management. The publication reports on key issues, such as technology-supported taxonomies, organizational culture assessment and effective communication. [Source: Council on Foundations]

Leading Boldly - Rarely do foundations publicly communicate their dissatisfaction with their grantees, withhold funds, or use tactics that carry the risks of creating ill will. Yet extraordinary results can be achieved if foundations were more imaginative, visible, and controversial. Here's how foundations can exercise leadership without misusing authority. Read more here. Excellence in Grantmaking: A Workshop for Grantmakers and Funding Organizations - In February 2004, Calgary and area funders and grantmakers joined together to participate in a high quality, dynamic and energizing skill-building opportunity for Board members, volunteers and staff members with grantmaking responsibility.
