| The study of leadership
gives us important insights into the development of more leaderful
communities.
When we understand leadership as a process
of engagement rather than as something someone is or is not,
we are able to map the process of leadership in action within
a community.
Once we understand the process of leadership
in a community, we can begin to influence this process and
help it to grow in a healthy manner.
Tamarack is pleased to offer this online
workshop on leadership! Leaders and Leaderful Communities"
draws from material we have gathered on the topic of Leadership.
Within this workshop we offer other research
on Leadership including a series of papers and commentary
by Paul Born and a compilation of some of the available thinking
and writing on leadership.
In this workshop:
The Leadership Challenge is a dynamic address
by Alan Broadbent, Chairman of Maytree and
co-founder of Tamarack - An Institute for Community Engagement
at the Face-to-Face Vibrant Communities Forum that took place
in September 2003.
Alan
talks about leader-led organizations, investing capital as
a paradigm in both business and social philanthropy; the importance
of a good business idea, plan and people as critical success
factors; the definition of good leadership; overcoming obstacles
to exercising leadership and the components of good leadership.
Alan issues a challenge to be brave, to step forward and challenge
ourselves to lead.
You can link to the text version of Alan's
presentation below, or view video clips.

Leadership has long been a fascination for
Paul Born.
From
small groups to medium-sized organizations, from church services
to community movements, Paul has acted as a leader in all
of these situations, yet says he continues to struggle to
understand what it means to be an effective leader.
This struggle has prompted a journey of discovery
on leadership for Paul that has taken him many places, including
a stint at Royal Roads University in 2000 where he completed
a Masters in Leadership.
Here you will find sections from Paul's thesis
and articles he has written on leadership.
Researching and writing them, Paul says,
helped him to improve his understanding of leadership - we
hope they'll add to your understanding as well.
Review of Supporting
Literature on Community, Leadership and Community Leadership
- This literature review asked three questions:
- What is community? What are the characteristics
of personal and collective journeys toward and away
from community? What are the characteristics of a
caring community?
- What is leadership and what can we learn about
leadership that is applicable to the building of communities?
- What is community leadership and how is it expressed
in communities today?
