Senator Landon Pearson was the featured speaker
for Tamarack’s June 2004 Tele-Learning Seminar. Senator
Pearson spoke with us about A Canada Fit for Children and
the role and rights of children in Canadian society.
In May 2002, more than 7,000 people from
around the world gathered in New York to take part in the
United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Children.
Billed
as the most important international meeting on children to
be held in more than ten years, the Session reviewed progress
since the World Summit for Children in 1990, identified emerging
issues and renewed the commitment of the international community
to the world’s children.
On April 22, 2004, Senator Landon Pearson,
on behalf of the Government of Canada, submitted the report,
“A Canada Fit for Children,” Canada's official
response to the commitments made in May 2002.
A Canada Fit for Children re-affirms the
importance of children in Canadian society as well as the
Government’s commitment to making children and families
a national priority.
“A Canada Fit for Children is the result
of input from thousands of Canadians, including young people,
who have a common interest in the rights and well-being of
children,” said Senator Pearson, who was instrumental
in developing the document.
