The 2009 tele-learning series, Seeking Community in Chaotic Times seeks to engage participants in a better understanding of the purpose and value of community in their lives and in the lives of those they serve. This series will help community development professionals to better understand the importance of the value of community and its importance in social change strategies. It is also intended to provide inspiration and tips to help participants open themselves up to community, and make a conscious choice as to the kind of community they desire in their lives - to feel more connected to the people they care about including family, friends, neighbours and those they work with.
By seeking community we can learn to develop deeper connections with our families, friends, and neighbours. By working together to make our families, neighbourhoods, communities and the world great places to live, for all, we will find purpose, belonging, security and fulfillment.
These are times of massive change fueled by financial uncertainty, environmental destruction, terrorism, globalization, war, and a world food crisis. These are chaotic times - and they are causing people to feel disconnected, afraid and alone.

Community and the Economics of Happiness - Paul Born talks to UBC Professor and renowned economist John Helliwell, who has gained an international reputation for his pioneering work in incorporating social concepts into economic theories of development and growth. Learn what Canadians have to say about what makes them happy at home, in their communities and at work, and how government and business can use the information to create happier and more productive communities. Access the online seminar and audio recordings here.
The Promise and Paradox of Community - Paul Born and Margaret Wheatley discuss some of the experiences that shaped her earliest beliefs about being human. Magaret challenges us to re-think some of the concepts and approaches we typically bring to our understanding of community. We sometimes lose clarity because we set ourselves goals that we then fear we cannot achieve, rather than simply doing the work. And we may not fully appreciate our innate orientation to the collective. Access the online seminar and audio recordings here.
A Revolution of Belonging - Paul Born interviews Vickie Cammack (PLAN Institute) and Zoel Breau (L’Arche Canada), two of Canada’s foremost experts on the topic of belonging and community. Both Vickie and Zoel have spent a lifetime working with people who have a disability. This work has led them to a deep place of understanding about the role of belonging in the well being of people and in the well being of the communities in which they live. How might we understand belonging in these chaotic times? What would a revolution look like? Access the online seminar and audio recordings here.
Why Community? - Paul Born and friends discuss moving beyond a world shaped by individualism, consumerism, and the “professionalism” of learning and caring, into rediscovery of self, others and community. This session is the perfect introduction to a full year of exploring the riches of community! Access the online seminar and audio recordings here.
