Here is the beginning of a catalogue we are compiling of books and resources we came across in our research. Although we haven’t personally read all the books, we included what information we had on them. If you would like to add comments about resources we have listed, or want to add to our list, we welcome your input.

Community Development Theory and Practice

Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community by Robert D. Putnam. In this book Putnam explores the value of “social capital” – the good will and social connections between people in communities and the glue that holds communities together.

Children’s Participation: The Theory and Practice of Involving Young Citizens in Community Development and Environmental Care by Roger Hart. This book is recommended for policy makers, teachers, youth workers and community leaders who work with children between ages 9-12.

Assets In Action: A Handbook for Making Communities Better Places to Grow Up by Deborah Fisher. This book provides you with the fundamentals of starting, building, and supporting a healthy community.

Raising Children in a Socially Toxic Environment by James Garbarino.

Better Together: Restoring the American Community by Robert D. Putnam, Lewis, M. Feldstein. This is a book of stories about people who are building communities and thereby building personal relationships.

Community and Growth by Jean Vanier. The author, founder of the L’Arche community, has written a reflective book on the nature and meaning of community.

The Different Drum: Community Making and Peace by M. Scott Peck. This book strives to reconnect people with their communities and demonstrates the positive power that a unified community can wield both locally and nationally.

Interaction between Schools, Home and Communities

Families, Schools and Communities Building Partnerships for Educating Children (3rd edition) by Chandler Barbour, Nita H. Barbour, Patricia A. Scully. This book examines that connections between the homes, schools and communities in which children live and presents models for parent-school-community partnerships.

Families, Schools and Communities: Together for Young Children by Donna Couchenour, Kent Chrisman. This is a good resource describing how to implement family involvement programs and to support families with young children.

Just When I Needed You: True Stories of Adults Who Made a Difference in the lives of Young People By Deborah Fisher. An inspiring and instructive book showing just how important adult-child relationships can be.

Books for Children

Neighborhood and Community by Kathleen M. Hollenbeck. A book to introduce the concepts of community to the younger child.

The Kids’ Guide to Working Out Conflicts (adult guide also available) by Naomi Drew. The author describes common forms of conflict, the reasons behind the conflicts and positive ways to deal with difficult circumstances.

How to Take the GRRRR Out of Anger by Elizabeth Verdick and Marjorie Lisovskis. This book speaks directly to children and guides them to healthy ways of expressing their anger.

Bringing Up Parents: The Teenager’s Handbook by Alex J. Packer. This book offers specific suggestions for teens on how to take initiative and improve family relationships.

How Rude: The Teenagers’ Guide to Good Manners, Proper Behavior, and Not Grossing People Out by Alex J. Packer. This is an etiquette book that teens will want to read because it’s humorous, doesn’t preach and deals with issues that matter to them.
