A Note from the Editor

Eunoia began in 2002 when I started compiling interesting resources that Tamarack staff were finding and emailed them to everyone in our office.  Soon, that email was being forwarded to folks in our network.  Today, over 2,900 people subscribe to Eunoia.  Though we've had to explain the name several times (it's Greek for "beautiful thinking"), we know that you've enjoyed this resource and found it valuable.

However, this will be the last issue of Eunoia. After seven years at Tamarack, I have made the tough decision to move on.  As the Editor of Eunoia, I have been privileged to spend time finding and sharing some of the best resources around on issues that matter to all of us. I will miss Tamarack, and the work of compiling this e-newsletter, but know that your research and news needs will continue to be met as Tamarack's online presence continues to grow. Stay tuned for our new and improved Engage!, which will incorporate many elements of Eunoia.

Best wishes,
Louise Kearney

Ideas We're Following

Social Profits - This essay discusses the various dimensions of the social economy - a unique and burgeoning sector of the economy in which business enterprises and economic activity seek not only to generate revenue but also to advance social goals.  This paper explores their many different forms and puts forward policy proposals to bolster social enterprises within the Canadian economy. Welfare Funds Fall Short of Rent - More than three-quarters of welfare recipients in Manitoba have been unable to cover their monthly rent with the money they receive from the province, a new report says. That means more than 10,000 households have been tapping into social assistance funds meant for food in order to pay their shelter costs. Read the article here. [Source: Winnipeg Free Press]

Rediscovering Social Innovation - Social entrepreneurship and social enterprise have become popular rallying points for those trying to improve the world. These two notions are positive ones, but neither is adequate when it comes to understanding and creating social change in all of its manifestations. In this Stanford Social Innovation Review article, the authors make the case that social innovation is a better vehicle for doing this. Read the article here. Public Policy's Impact on Volunteering - This study explores the impact of public policy on volunteering in community-based organizations and finds that volunteering in these organizations is increasingly being molded by external factors such as legislation, policy and funding programs. The full report can be downloaded here. [Source: Nonprofitscan]

Closing the Gap in a Generation - Social justice is a matter of life and death. It affects the way people live, their consequent chance of illness, and their risk of premature death. "Closing the gap in a generation: Health equity through action on the social determinants of health" is the final report from the World Health Organization's Commission on the Social Determinants of Health.  Learn more here.
